Abstract
Recent events relevant to the topic of this discussion are the takeover of Monarch Life by North American Life and the takeover of Dominion Life by Manulife, in both cases for subsequent merger. Also, there has been considerable discussion concerning the powers of financial institutions. These events and discussion present a possible picture of both contraction and expansion of the need for actuaries.
