The Origin of the Glass Electrode Response

Glass … Current Issues

Abstract

After a summary of the operational basis of pH and phi glass electrodes the current state of understanding their response is presented and discussed. As proposed earlier, the equilibria of functional groups at the glass surface with cations of contacting solutions, which determine the ionic species entering the glass by interdiffusion and in electric fields, are thought to be responsible also for the formation of potential differences between membrane glass and solution. Application of electrode kinetics yields equations which describe the experimental results also at pure pH and pM response of the glass. The functioning of glass electrodes with protonated membranes excludes mechanisms based on an exchange of different ionic species between glass and solution. The equilibrium surface coverage was determined by electrolyses of membranes in contact with appropriate anodic solutions and subsequent concentration profiling the glass by IBSCA. Three different kinds of sodium error are expected and verified experimentally.
