Abstract

There is evidence in surveys of HI in the inner Galaxy for gas more than 500 pc from the plane that shares the rotation of material in the plane. The percentage of HI with |z| > 500 pc at the subcentral points rises approximately monotonically from less than 2% at R ≤ 3 kpc to ≳l5% near the solar neighborhood. Some cloudy structure is observed. Some of the high-z gas has a larger velocity dispersion than the HI confined more closely to the plane.

The National Radio Astronomy is operated by Associated Universities, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.
