Abstract
Proper management of the abnormal Papanicolaou smear is of the greatest importance in clinical practice. Cancer of the cervix may well be a prevent-able disease and much of the credit for recognising this belongs to G.N. Papanicolaou whose definitive studies on vaginal and cervical cytology at the Cornell Medical College, New York proved the usefulness of exfoliative cytology in dectecting cervical cancer in its incipiency - a stage which can be completely removed or cured by simple forms of treatment. Papanicolaou’s work ranks as one of the greatest contributions to science and the report on his studies is now one of the classics in medical literature (Papanicolaou and Trout 1943). Notable contributions to the development of this diagnostic tool have been made by Ruth Graham and associates (1948), Earnst Ayre (1954) in the United States, and by Watchel and Plester (1954) and Anderson (1959) in the United Kingdom. From the nature of the cells seen and the general pattern of the smear a trained cytoligst can confidently differentiate between cervical dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and invasive cancer (Papanicolaou and Trout 1943; Reagan et al. 1957; Koss and Durfee 1961).
