Abstract
Are scientific discoveries responsible for technical progress ? As related to the French experience in the field of urban sewerage, the main explanatory factor seems to be the change in urbanization. New types of urban conception set engineers new problems regarding sanitation. New techniques were defined in relation to new urbanization patterns. This happened in the 19th century, after the industrial revolution attracted manpower into the cities. Sewerage techniques also changed after World War II due to nationalization and standardization of the urbanization process. Recently, the impact of car ownership on urban shaping has led to tremendous problems for draining off rainwater and to a demand for new techniques.
The close relation between urbanization types and sewerage techniques suggests a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach to sanitation problems. Not only engineers but also geographers, sociologists and urban planners should feel concerned.
