Abstract
Throughout this discussion, the status of Bariba women is assumed to be of critical significance to an examination of birth practices because reproduction is a domain of particular concern to women.8 “Women’s goals are ‖ defined by their position in the society as a whole,” (Lamphere 1974:100) as are the means which they select to achieve those goals. Correspondingly, the goals of Bariba women regarding reproduction might be expected to derive from their status in Bariba society.
