Abstract
The natural history of lung cancer precludes curative therapy in a majority of cases. For example, fifty to sixty percent of patients who present with upper lobe lesions have bilateral mediastinal lymph node metastasis as do 30% of patients with lower lobe lesions [1,2]. Hematogenous spread with multiple organ involvement has been reported in 30% of all patients at the time of diagnosis with oat cell carcinoma having the highest incidence of distant metastasis [3–5].
