Abstract

To describe the behaviour of randomly time-variant linear channels is comparably easy assuming a wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) channel. Its properties are formulated by the scattering function. Some measured scattering functions are presented. The scattering function is shown to comprehend the sea state influence only. However the observed variability is often due to changes in sound speed layers or water level. These slow fluctuations effect an unstationarity during the time intervals of local stationarity of the sea state.
