Structure and Function of Lymphocyte Surface Immunoglobulin

Abstract

The nature and chemical properties of the lymphocyte receptor for antigen have puzzled immunologists for over 70 years. On the basis of the exquisite binding specificity which antibodies showed for antigen, Ehrlich proposed in 1900 that the cell surface receptor for antigen must be antibody. The bulk of present evidence supporting this hypothesis has been obtained in an indirect manner by using antisera directed against immunoglobulins to inhibit binding of antigen by lymphocytes (Warner et al., 1970; Davie et al., 1971; Greaves and Hogg, 1971) and a variety of immune phenomena (Lesley and Dutton, 1970; Feldmann and Diener, 1971; Mason and Warner, 1970; Basten et al., 1971; Riethmuller et al., 1971).
