Abstract

The Commentary’s doctrine on the object of metaphysics appears to be quite simple: metaphysics is the study of being as such. This doctrine is exposed in several lessons, one notices immediately: In IV Meta., lectiones 1–2; In VI Meta., lectio 1; In XI Meta., lectiones 1 and 3. Yet the more closely one inspects these passages, the more complex the doctrine is seen to become. Hence, in an attempt to do justice to the multiple aspects of the problem, only the few paragraphs from Book IV will be studied, albeit in great detail.
