Abstract

A full scale Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system was evaluated for remediation of subsurface contamination of the chlorinated Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPL) at a waste site at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS). The DNAPLs, primarily carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethene, and tetrachloroethene, were disposed of in a shallow burial trench in the 1950s and 1960s. Since that time, DNAPLs migrated into the subsurface. A SVE system was selected and operated as an Interim Measure/Interim Remedial Action under the Rocky Rats environmental restoration program.
