Part of the book series: Environment & Policy ((ENPO,volume 5))

Abstract

Rural areas need to fulfil a large variety of functions and accommodate many activities such as agriculture, forestry, nature conservation, water resources development, outdoor recreation and many others. As a result, the quality of the rural environment as a whole is under pressure. These pressures are caused in particular by claims on space (e.g. urbanization and infrastructure), agricultural production and its environmental effects (e.g. eutrofication, man-induced drought, acidification and inherited pollution), and non-agricultural activities and their environmental effects (e.g. disturbance of nature areas by outdoor recreation functions).
