Abstract

Several aspects of multiple drug resistance (MDR) have remained unclear since the original experiments demonstrated that toxic, anticancer drugs are pumped out of resistant cancer cells. It was unclear initially how a common mechanism could pump out a diverse series of anticancer drugs including adriamycin, actinomycin D, emetine, vincristine, vinblastine, chloroquine and VP-16. No structural relationship among the affected drugs was apparent.
