Abstract

Porins are passive channels in the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria, mitochondria and chloroplasts. The high resolution crystal structure of a bacterial porin showed features from which functional properties can be derived. In particular, the structure revealed that there exists a strong transversal electric field across the size-defining pore which facilitates the permeation of polar solutes while excluding nonpolar ones.
