Applications of Mass Spectrometry in Biochemical Studies of Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids

  • Chapter
Selected Topics in Mass Spectrometry in the Biomolecular Sciences

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 504))

Abstract

The advent of soft ionization procedures such as fast-atom bombardment, electrospray and thermospray, and, more recently, matrix-assisted laser desorption - time of flight, has greatly extended the utilization of mass spectrometry in analyses of nucleobases, nucleosides, nucleotides and nucleic acids. Here specific examples of the application of MS techniques to studies of nucleic acid base composition, sequence and modifications, of nucleoside and nucleotide antibiotic activity, and of nucleotide cell signalling functions are reviewed and potential future advances discussed.
