Abstract
Physicians seldom appreciate the diagnostic value of right-hemisphere psychological dysfunction. While most internists recognize the value of aphasia in localizing a lesion to the left hemisphere; few utilize analogous lateralized symptoms pointing to involvement of the right hemisphere. Psychiatrists often rely on formal neuropsychological testing, waiting days or even weeks for the final report, when a few minutes of bedside evaluation might give an immediate and direct diagnosis. Even some neurologists and neurosurgeons who will spend thousands of dollars to obtain laboratory confirmation of focal brain disease fail to fully appreciate the localizing value of right-hemisphere psychological dysfunction.
