Abstract

The professional diver has larger than normal lungs due to an increase in the size of the alveoli. This enlargement is not matched by an increase in the size of the airways, hence there is present some limitation on expiratory airflow. The long-term effect of these lung changes is unknown but information is being gathered in order to answer this question.
