Elongation System Involved in the Biosynthesis of very Long Chain Fatty Acids in Brassica Napus Seeds: Characterization and Solubilization

  • Chapter
Plant Lipid Metabolism

Abstract

Erucic acid is synthesized by extending oleic acid, presumably as oleoyl-CoA, through two rounds of elongase reactions involving the addition of two carbons each cycle. This elongase catalyzes at least four reactions required for the extension, reduction, and dehydration of the acyl-CoA. In this communication, we report a preliminary characterization and solubilization of elongase from developing seeds of high erucic acid variety of Brassica napus.
