Abstract
The first powerful ice-breaker in the world (10,000 hp), the Ermak was built according to admiral Makarov’s project and was put into operation on February 21, 1899. Thereafter until 1921 the navigation of ice-breakers and Arctic-type ships in the Russian Arctic were largely associated with expeditions and research.
