Overzicht

Slechts één druk is met voldoende zekerheid aan Hans van Ruremund toe te schrijven. In de ogen van de buitenwereld was hij nauwelijks een jaar actief maar achter de schermen moet hij wel meer gedrukt hebben. In verschillende deeltjes, klein, in een händig formaat om ongemerkt op zak te hebben, verscheen in de loop van 1525 bij hem de volledige Nederlandse vertaling van de Bijbel. Een schijnbaar onschuldige uitgave, helemaal orthodox, die voor het grootste gedeelte, hier en daar wat verbeterd naar de Vulgata, teruggaat op de eerste Nederlandstalige verschenen Bijbel uit Delft in 1477. De Pentateuch, de Psalmen en het ganse Nieuwe Testament gaan echter terug naar de Luther-vertaling. Ietwat gevaarlijker waren de kanttekeningen waar het plakkaat van 17 juli 1526 speciaal de aandacht op vestigde.

Abstract

There is only one known printed work which may be attributed with reasonable certainty to Hans van Ruremund. For the outside world he was active for barely a year, but behind the scenes he must certainly have printed more than this one work. During the course of 1525 he published a complete Dutch translation of the Bible in several small volumes, handy enough to be carried in one’s pocket. Apparently a perfectly innocent publication, completely orthodox, it was based almost entirely on the first Dutch-language Bible (Delft, 1477) except for the occasional correction made after reference to the Vulgate. In fact its Pentateuch, Psalms, and entire New Testament were based on Luther’s translation. More dangerous even were the marginal notes to which the poster of 17 July 1526 drew particular attention.
