Abstract

Since the concepts of the fluid protein-lipid mosaic model for membranes (Singer 1971) were first applied to chloroplast thylakoids (Anderson 1975), the complex energy transducing function and structure of thylakoids is beginning to be understood in terms of their molecular organization. Not only is there a marked asymmetry in the organization of thylakoid multisubunit protein complexes across the membrane, but also there is an extreme lateral asymmetry in the distribution of most complexes between stacked and unstacked regions in chloroplasts with grana stacks.
