Abstract
The concept of democracy, as a human construct, is both embedded and evolving within a particular historical time and space. However, whatever the particularities of the definition of democracy in use, one of the core ideas that is always associated with this concept is the notion that decisions about governing lie somehow in the hands of ‘the people’ – that is, democracy is the idea that members of a society (citizens) have the right and responsibility to take part in deciding how power relationships should be organized to engage everyone in public decision-making.
