The Essentials of Clinical Dialysis

Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis is an established form of renal replacement therapy. With its increasing popularity, we are now encountering a variety of complications. Noninfectious complications are usually less common as compared with infectious complications such as bacterial peritonitis. In this article, we discuss some of the common noninfectious complications of peritoneal dialysis such as chyloperitoneum, hemoperitoneum, herniation, hydrothorax, acid-base and electrolyte disorders, and encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. Since noninfectious complications are less common than infectious complications, diagnosis might be delayed due to lack of awareness. The awareness of these complications thus will help us in early diagnosis and treatment in patients with peritoneal dialysis.
