Cyclone Aila: Immediate Challenges and Impact on Socio-economy

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges faced in rescue and relief operations in the event of cyclone Aila and impact analysis on socioeconomic conditions of the Alia effected people. The paper has been developed using simple research methodology. Aila affected about 40 million people; washed away several thousand homes, took 190 lives, wounded more than 7103 people, flattened huge standing crops, hampered communications system and destroyed infrastructure, livestock, fisheries, social and economic activities. On the event of Aila government and non-government actors moved to mitigate the sufferings, miseries and resilience of the people but, faced some challenges. The challenges, disaster operations and the impacts of damages on socio-economic condition on affected people are highlighted and concluded with findings that comprehensive control on cyclone is not possible; the damaging effect of cyclone has to be faced and resilience to be ensured followed by structural and non-structural measures.
