Abstract

In this chapter, Matsumoto conducts in-depth case studies of eight failed overseas acquisitions by Japanese companies. For each case, he discusses the original objective of the outbound M&A and the decisions of the managers involved. He goes on to examine the management after the acquisition and the specific challenges presented in each case. He concludes each case study with a discussion of the consequences of the outbound acquisition for both firms involved. He ends this chapter with brief summaries of all 51 failed M&A ventures.
