Abstract

Bissell reflects on a short car journey that he undertook with his father from his home to the coast a few evenings each week for many years when he was a teenager. Inspired by non-representational theories, the chapter considers automobility as a space of singular happenings and felt intensities with the aim of making the car perhaps a little stranger by exploring its unsung capacities, and to acknowledge its role in writing the richness of the world. It experiments with the force of remembered description, performing a series of lines that fold the materialities of Norfolk with the durations of love, longing and loss.
