Toxicology of Nanoparticles: Insights from Drosophila

Abstract

Nanoparticles (NPs) due to their extraordinary properties offer to revolutionize diverse areas of our life from consumer products to biomedical applications. With the better understanding and advancement of new techniques, a wide range of nanoparticles can be synthesized according to our requirement. However, a major concern lies in their impact on human health. Therefore, need of the present time before its incorporation in consumer products is to first evaluate various parameters like physico-chemical properties, dosage, trans-generational effect, etc. in an in vivo condition.

Drosophila and many other model organisms have been extensively used to evaluate in vivo effect of nanoparticles as many basic biological, physiological, and neurological properties are conserved between mammals and these model organisms. Therefore, in the present chapter, we have described about various model organisms implied in appraising effect of nanoparticles in in vivo condition. Consideration of the observations of these studies will further help in betterment of nano-unified consumer and medical products with least side effect on human health.
