TENTACLE: A database system for the world wide web

Abstract

Currently most web-database interaction is loosely coupled: Usually database and web server employ different data models (the former is relational, the latter network based) necessitating a nontrivial translation effort. The translation tends to be inefficient, requiring gateways which may have to combine query and utility languages to extract and rewrite the database content resulting in the well known impedance mismatch. In this paper we describe TENTACLE, a database system which achieves a tighter integration between web server and database by implementing a web server in the TENTACLE database process itself. Since the system employs a graph-based model as its native storage representation and provides a combined (declarative) query and (procedural) programming language, it is possible to execute queries and present their results in a single phase, avoiding complex translations and performance penalties.
