Abstract
On1 Jan., 1901, the colonies of Mew South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania were federated under the name of the ‘Commonwealth of Australia,’ the designation of ‘colonies’ being at the same time changed into that of ‘states’—except in the case of Northern Territory, which was transferred from South Australia to the Commonwealth as a ‘territory’ on 1 Jan., 1911.
