Abstract

On 8 January 1985, 76-year-old Mahmoud Taha and four other members of the Republican Brothers were convicted of heresy, opposing the application of Islamic law, endangering public safety, inciting opposition to the government and re-establishing a banned political party (the SSU was still the only permitted political party in the country). All were convicted, but given a stay of execution to recant their beliefs. Taha refused, and was hanged on the 18th.
