Abstract
William Rankins is best known for his strident denunciation of the theater in A Mirrour of Monsters (1587). His career as a pamphleteer was marked by moralistic tirades. Like A Mirrour of Monsters’s concern with theater-goers transformed by the spectacle of a play, The English ape worries over the transformation of Englishmen who adopt foreign fashions or manners.
