Sexual Spaces

Abstract

Sex and sexuality are confusing. The amount of sexual freedom afforded adults in contemporary society is both a blessing and a curse. The resolving of this confusion is made no less urgent by the fact that sex is a gendered concept. In spite of the revolution in sexuality and gender equality over the past several decades (Bauman 2004; Weeks 2007; Halberstam 2013), women and non-heteronormative groups are still experiencing discrimination and stereotyping. If anything, women as sexual creatures have become even more governed by social discourses surrounding body and gender performance, and arguably, sexual desire (Berg 2009; Douglas 2010; Walter 2010).
