Introduction

Many conventional and advanced technological applications require the use of materials that not only possess certain characteristic bulk properties but also specific surface properties. The surface properties can be achieved by adopting various techniques to modify the surfaces of the bulk material, for example, ion beam methods and chemical reactions. Alternatively, a layer of a different material can be deposited onto the bulk substrate to provide the surface properties. Depending on the thickness (which is not well defined), a film is a thin coating and a coating is a thick film. The term thin film is often used to describe a deposit of less than 100 nm thick. The optical, electrical, magnetic, chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of films may be designed for many applications. These include, for example, antireflective coatings, decoration, waveguides, electrical insulation and conduction, memory storage media, diffusion barrier, oxidation and corrosion...
