Nanoarchaeota

Introduction

All cultivated Archaea known so far belong to one of two phyla, Crenarchaeota or Euryarchaeota (Woese et al., 1990). The Crenarchaeota are composed of three orders, Desulfurococcales (Huber et al., 2001), Sulfolobales and Thermoproteales (Burggraf et al., 1997; Garrity and Holt, 2001a). The Euryarchaeota harbor different orders of methanogenic and halophilic microorganisms, sulfate reducers (Archaeoglobales), Thermoplasmatales, and Thermococcales (Garrity and Holt, 2001b). In addition, several years ago, a third archaeal phylum was proposed, the so-called “Korarchaeota” (Barns et al., 1996). However, this group is only indicated by 16S rDNA sequences obtained from environmental DNAs and still nothing is known of the corresponding organisms. In contrast, a novel phylum named “Nanoarchaeota” was described recently by Huber et al. (2002), which is represented by a nano-sized hyperthermophilic symbiont that grows attached to the surface of a new Ignicoccus species. “Nanoarchae...
