Antigen-dependent T cell/B cell activation requires costimulatory signals. Immune deficiencies have shown that the interaction between CD40 on the B cell surface and CD40 ligand on the T cell surface is essential for the initiation of a germinal centre reaction. CD40 belongs to the family of tumor necrosis factor-like receptors.
