Traditionally, the term detector has been used to refer to the tool that extracts the features from the image, e.g., a corner, blob, or edge detector. However, this only makes sense if it is a priori clears what the corners, blobs, or edges in the image are, so one can speak of “false detections” or “missed detections.” This only holds in the usage scenario where features are semantically meaningful, otherwise extractor would probably be more appropriate. The term detector is however more widely used.
