Definition
Finger localization refers to an individual’s ability to identify and differentiate between stimulated fingers (Benton, 1955; Lezak, Howieson, & Loring, 2004; Miller & Hynd, 2004; Reed, 1967). Finger localization is a complex process which requires symbolic representation, intersensory integration, and intrasensory differentiation (Benton, 1977; Lefford, Birch, & Green, 1974). Young children may not be able to consistently perform finger localization tasks successfully until later childhood or early adolescence (Benton, 1955; Lefford et al., 1974; Miller & Hynd, 2004). Finger localization can be assessed via visual–verbal, tactile–visual, or tactile–verbal interaction (Benton, 1955; Kinsbourne & Warrington, 1962; Miller & Hynd, 2004; Poeck & Orgass, 1969).
