Small mare (Whitaker and Andersson 1982).

Origin of Term

Solitude, featureless land, Latin.

History of Nomenclature

Introduced by Antoniadi (1934), who applied this term to “desert-like” dark to gray patches, taking into account “the desert condition and the enormous amount of heat received by the planet” (Antoniadi 1934[1974], p. 32). Note that bright albedo features have no generic term.
