Abstract

A developmental perspective on language acquisition in autism spectrum disorders is presented. Research findings about the heterogeneity of language concerns in autism and the presence of delays and autism-specific differences in language use and structure are summarized and then interpreted from a developmental social-interaction perspective on communication development. Implications for early intervention are discussed.
