Spaceflight Analogs: An Overview

Encyclopedia of Bioastronautics

Synonyms

Ground based spaceflight analogs; Space simulation facilities

Definition

An overview of spaceflight analogs for bioastronautics concerns itself with terrestrial space life sciences platforms. A “terrestrial space life sciences platform” is defined here as any facility, technology, or method that allows for simulation of certain aspects of the spaceflight environment.

Detailed Description

Introduction

Real space life sciences research opportunities using manned or unmanned platforms such as the International Space Station are very limited. Therefore, it is essential to use terrestrial platforms which can simulate certain aspects of the space environment like altered gravity, radiation, harsh environmental conditions in space or habitation in remote areas. A multitude of such terrestrial platforms exist all over the world. Here, the basic principles used by these platforms are explained and some examples for such platforms are given.
