Introduction
Jo Ellen Patterson, PhD, is a Professor of Marital and Family Therapy (MFT) at the University of San Diego (USD) and a Voluntary Clinical Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Public Health and Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Her major scholarly and clinical contributions have been in the areas of family therapy training, a biopsychosocial systems approach to family therapy, global mental health, and the integration of mental health into primary care. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, the American Journal of Family Therapy, and Families, Systems, & Health.

Dr. Patterson received her bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Baylor University, her master’s degree in Counseling from Wake Forest University, and her doctoral degree in Family and Child Studies from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
