Indication and Contraindication of Couple and Family Therapy

Over the past decade, numerous systemic couple and family treatments have emerged as some of the most notable evidence-based models, second only to traditional cognitive-behavioral therapies in total number of evidence-based treatments. For many types of chronic and severe problems – such as conduct disorder, alcohol and substance use disorders, eating disorders, and psychosis – couple and family therapies are frequently the first choice for treatment, even before medication or individual therapy. In general, the more difficult it is to treat a particular condition or individual client, the more likely involving significant others will be the most effective treatment (Lebow 2006). Overall, child and adolescent interventions have a broader and stronger evidence base.
