Principles of the State Policy of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Region for the Period Till 2020 and Beyond – approved by the President of the Russian Federation on September 18, 2008. The principles outline the main objectives, main tasks, strategic priorities, and mechanisms for implementation of the policy of the Russian Federation in the Arctic, as well as a system of measures of strategic planning of socioeconomic development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and ensuring the national security of Russia. The document indicates that the national interests of Russia in the Arctic provide for the use of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation as a strategic resource base of the country; the preservation of the Arctic as a zone of peace and cooperation, saving its unique ecological systems; and the use of the Northern Sea Route as a national unified transport communications of Russia in the Arctic.
