Atlantic Cod of the Barents Sea – a run of the Atlantic cod often referred to as Lofoten-Barents Sea, Arctic Norwegian, Northeastern Arctic, or Arctic cod. This is A.C.’s most common and powerful run. The fish features a long life cycle. The usual length is 40–80 cm long; it can also be 150–180 cm long weighing in excess of 40 kg. A.C. inhabits the seabed layers at the depth of 500–600 m. The assemblages of A.C. are observed in the open areas of the Barents Sea, mostly at the depth of 150–250 m and the temperature of 1–5 °C. While in winter A.C. avoids areas with temperatures below 2°C; in summer and early autumn it may occur at the temperature close to zero centigrade, even at negative temperature. The spawning occurs in March–April at the depth of up to 100 m at the interface of the underlying Atlantic waters and the local colder and fairly fresher fjord waters.
