Overview

Homework is the practice of assigning extra work for students to do outside of regular class time. It has long been a common practice in secondary schools. It has been associated with effective student learning, skill development, and achievement. Despite these positive associations that are broadly accepted by teachers and students themselves, students who do a lot of homework also report more academic stress, physical health problems, and lack of balance in their lives. These types of conclusions reveal difficult situations for many adolescents, particularly academically successful ones. The conclusions also fuel controversies about the nature and amount of homework that would be ideal for students. These controversies are likely to continue as research does not reveal simple rules about the benefits and risks of doing homework.
