Abstract

Dermoscopy, also known as epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) or dermatoscopy, is a noninvasive examination of the skin that has become a first-line screening tool among dermatologists who seek to prevent skin cancer through early screening and prevention. Dermoscopy increases the clinician’s sensitivity and specificity when differentiating benign from malignant skin lesions and has recently proven to be useful in other dermatologic fields such as inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases, and trichology. We structured this chapter as an up-to-date review of dermoscopy in clinical practice and an update to the many uses of this relatively inexpensive device that a clinician can become proficient within a short period of time. We hope that the reader will be able to take advantage of this basic introduction to the world of dermoscopy and see that the use of this screening modality can both increase confidence in daily clinical practice as well as decrease unnecessary healthcare expenditures associated with biopsies of benign lesions.
