Definition
A teratoma is a tumor, which arises during fetal development, and contains components that may resemble derivatives of any of the three germ layers of pluripotential/germ cells. As a result of the type of cells which are affected, the location of this type of tumor varies depending on the outcome of cell differentiation. These types of tumors are most often found in the reproductive organs, or along the midline of the body. The most common tumor found in newborn babies is a sacrococcygeal teratoma.
