Definition

Hypertension is usually diagnosed when a person’s systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the office or clinic is ≥140 mmHg and/or their diastolic blood pressure (DBP) is ≥90 mmHg following repeated examinations (Williams et al. 2018; Unger et al. 2020). This is based on the evidence from multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that treatment of patients with these blood pressure (BP) values is beneficial. The same definition is used in young, middle-aged, and older people, whereas BP centiles are used in children and teenagers, in whom data from interventional trials are not available (Williams et al. 2018). BP measurement is the fundamental means and method of evaluating BP level, diagnosing hypertension, and observing antihypertensive efficacy.
