Definition

In 1989, cleaner production was firstly defined as “The continuous application of an integrated environmental strategy to processes, products and services to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and the environment.” UNEP (2015) considers this definition still relevant today. Cleaner production is also known as a concept that aims at preventing the production of waste while increasing efficiencies in the uses of energy, water, resources, and human capital (Elsevier 2019).

Cleaner production addresses problems at the source, using a product lifecycle approach that considers changes in technology, processes, resources, and practices to reduce waste and environmental and health risks; minimize environmental damage; use energy and resources more efficiently; increase business profitability and competitiveness; and increase the efficiency of production processes (UNEP 2015; Gavrilescu 2004).
