Abstract

Mesoporous silicon has tunable thermal properties that can be radically different from those of nonporous silicon. This updated review collates published data on the major thermal constants from varied techniques of measurement. Thermal properties of porous silicon are compared to those of other materials, including solid silicon. The combination of very low thermal conductivity and heat capacity of highly porous silicon has led to a range of potential applications such as thermal isolation of microdevices, chip-based ultrasound emission, thermoelectrics, and photothermal therapy.
